What is EarlyAct?
Gene Sparing, Chairperson

The Park Forest Rotary Club sponsored the first EarlyAct Club in the area in 2004. The purpose is to bring Rotary values and ethics toalt elementary students. The Forest Trail Middle School is home to about 32 sixth, seventh and eighth graders in this year's club. They hold weekly meetings on Wednesday afternoons. Their motto is "Service Above Self," and it is inspirational to watch them grow each week in it's pursuit. They spent the first meetings electing officers, committee chairs and planning their fund raising, service and fellowship activities.

Fundraising:

To raise money they have sold personalized paper leaves and candy with notes written by EalyActors to fellow students. They sold Rotary Poinsettias and Golden Opportunity Books. They had a successful cookie dough sale and they plan to have an all school "penny war" where the winning classroom will receive a pizza and movie party at the EarlyAct Club's expense. They have held popcorn sales at the local US Bank.

Service:

For service they have volunteered in the school library, collected paper around their school for recycling, plan to clean up the Park Forest Wetlands area and have scheduled a Feeding Children Worldwide program. In the past the club has put together approximately 3,000 meals each year which are sent to needy children and their families in Indonesia where lives were literally washed away by the Tsunami. This year the club raised it's own funds to pay for all of their service activities.

Fellowship:

For fellowship the club was hosted at Village hall for a movie and snacks. They are planning a Friday evening at their school with an open gym, pizza and movie evening. They continue to grow their numbers although there is a natural attrition as youngsters have competing school and after school activities. Each year the total participants has grown. Miss Valente is the teacher sponsor and she is a great inspiration for the children helping them to gain the leadership skills necessary to step up and take as well as fulfill the responsibilities of a child run club. I should characterize these youngsters as young adults since their actions, motives and intentions are very mature in their contemplation and execution.
